OVERALL OBJECTIVE:
To improve management of water resources, and ensure that most marginalized communities are empowered and supported to achieve their rights to accessing clean water. Specific Objective 1: Monitor the implementation of National Water Strategy and the decision-making regarding use and management of water resources. Specific Objective 2: Promote inclusiveness and community engagement in decision-making regarding water resources. Specific Objective 3: Raise awareness of relevant stakeholders and the public at large on the importance of preserving water resources.
PROJECT PURPOSES:
The project's purpose is directly related to water resource management as a contributor to promote the role and capacities of civil society and other civic actors in promoting better governance, inclusive policy-making and democracy, human rights and fundamental freedoms. In full compliance with the call guidelines, the Action intends to promote social rights, participatory democracy, access to justice, safeguard public health and natural resources.
PROJECT STRATEGY:
The project represents a continuation of a grassroots initiative of which the applicant has been part for years. As such, it represents a unique opportunity to scale the environmental movement in most disadvantaged communities. It proposes inclusive and generic growth and development scenario for an environmentalist movement in Kosovo. LDIP enjoys a significant reputation among key stakeholders and institutions despite their often-critical stand towards them. In addition, the critical infrastructure for communication comprising of a wide audience that is also a key added value to be crucial for achieving objectives effectively and efficiently.
ACTIVITIES:
The main work packages to be implemented as part of the Action include: 1. Policy and Decision-making monitoring on matters related to water. The specific activities to take place will be monitoring the implementation of water strategy, monitoring of institutional decisions on matters of water, and promoting good governance with regards to these issues. 2. Empowering local communities will be focusing on identifying communities affected by projects in the vicinity of water resources, and developing their capacities to defend their right to access to water. They will also be supported with expertise, technical assistance, and information among others. 3. Educating stakeholders will include an active communication component and presence in the public domain. Aside from traditional media outlets, the Action will also utilize the Group for the Protection of Waters and Environment on Facebook, which currently counts over 30K members. Activities will also include face-to-face activities with environmental activists and local communities.
RESULTS:
The main Outputs/results to be produced through projects implementation include: - Five policy briefs on topics related to water will be produced and published; - Two monitoring reports on the implementation of Water Strategy published and promoted; At least 20 discussions with local communities organized on topics of water; - Meetings with relevant stakeholders and public statements/press conferences to advocate for environmentally-sound decision-making. - Local community Councils on environment protection established; - Communities supported to participate in public hearings and other consultative meetings with relevant stakeholders; - Capacities of local leaders developed to ensure qualitative participation; - Two monitoring reports on the quality of rivers published; - Two annual Awareness Raising/Education campaigns targeting the general public. Make water preservation and management a top priority in the public domain.
